How Is Your Paycheck Calculated?

Your take-home pay is your gross income minus pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA, health insurance), federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA taxes (Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45%).

Federal tax uses progressive brackets — you don't pay one rate on all income. For 2026 single filers: 10% up to $11,925, 12% up to $48,475, 22% up to $103,350, 24% up to $197,300, 32% up to $250,525, 35% up to $626,350, and 37% above. Only the dollars within each bracket are taxed at that rate.

This calculator uses the 2026 tax brackets and includes FICA taxes. State tax is an estimate — actual rates vary by state. For precise numbers, consult a CPA or tax professional.
