What Is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The concept is simple: save and invest aggressively (often 50% or more of your income), then retire once your portfolio reaches 25x your annual expenses (the 4% rule). A person earning $80,000 and spending $40,000 has a 50% savings rate and can potentially retire in 17 years instead of working to 65. The FIRE movement has several flavors: Lean FIRE (minimalist lifestyle), Fat FIRE (higher spending), and Barista FIRE (part-time work supplementing portfolio withdrawals).
