The Golden Rules of Tipping

1. Tip on the pre-tax amount. Don't tip on tax. Some restaurants print "suggested tips" calculated on the post-tax total — that's padding.
2. 18-20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. 15% was the old standard. 18-20% is now expected for good service.
3. Always tip in cash when possible. Servers get cash tips immediately. Credit card tips may be pooled and distributed later.
4. For bad service, tip 10-15% and speak to a manager. Don't stiff the server — they often tip out bartenders, bussers, and hosts regardless.

When NOT to Tip

Not every situation calls for a tip. You don't need to tip:

• Professionals — doctors, lawyers, accountants. (A holiday gift is more appropriate.)
• Counter service only — fast food, grab-and-go, self-serve. The iPad tip screen at a bakery is optional.
• Owners of businesses. Tip the employees, not the owner cutting your hair.
• When a service charge is already included. Check your bill — some restaurants auto-add 18-20% for parties of 6+.
